What is a long-term EU resident?

This is someone who has a long-term EU resident permit. The permit allows you to live indefinitely in the EU country that issued the permit. You can apply for this residence permit if you are a non-EU national. And if you are a long-term resident in an EU country. However, not all EU countries have a long-term EU resident permit. Coming to the Netherlands as a long-term EU resident

Do you have a long-term EU resident permit in another EU country? If so, it is easier for you to move to another EU country. For the Netherlands, the following applies:

  • You do not need a provisional residence permit (MVV).
  • You do not need to take a TB test.
  • You pay less for an application of some residence permits. View the cost of applications.
  • You can apply for a residence permit for economically inactive long-term EU residents.
  • You will be allowed to work in the Netherlands without a work permit (in Dutch: tewerkstellingsvergunning or TWV) sooner. A TWV is a separate work permit. The employer must apply for it. Are you going to get a Dutch residence permit and start working? Then you only need a TWV for the first 12 months. After that, you can work in the Netherlands without a TWV.

Apply for a Dutch residence permit

You cannot live in the Netherlands with an EU long-term residence permit from another EU country. If you want to live in the Netherlands, you need a Dutch residence permit. You apply for a residence permit for a specific purpose of stay. The purpose of stay is the reason why you want to come to the Netherlands. For example: for work, for study or to live with your partner.

Each purpose of stay has different requirements. You can find out what these requirements are on the residence permit pages:
