Requirements
- You have a valid residence permit that you can still extend. You cannot extend the residence permits for the following residence purposes:
- Working Holiday Program/Working Holiday Scheme
- Cultural exchange
- Au Pair
- Stay as a trainee or student on work placement
- Orientation year Netherlands
- You still meet the requirements for your residence permit. For these requirements visit the web page about the residence permit that you have.
- You have a valid passport or another travel document.
- Your main residence is in the Netherlands. This means that you live in the Netherlands and spend most of your time there.
- You are not a danger to public order or national security.
- During the application for the residence permit you have now, you did not give any false information. And you did not withhold information.
Process and costs

You can submit the application online or in writing by post. You can usually apply for extension yourself. Do you have a residence permit as a highly skilled migrant, researcher or student in higher education? You should apply for the extension while your residence permit is still valid. Has the validity of your residence permit just expired? In that case, make sure that you submit the application no later than 4 weeks after the expiry of your residence permit. In this way you make sure that the residence permits succeed each other and you will not have a residence gap. If you have a residence gap, it will take longer before you can apply for a permanent residence permit or become a Dutch citizen.
Residence permit expired more than 4 weeks
Did your residence permit expire more than 4 weeks ago? Then you should apply for extension as soon as possible. You may have a residence gap. Make sure to include a letter in which you explain why you did not apply in time.
Residence permit expired more than 2 years
Did your residence permit expire 2 or more years ago? Then you can no longer apply for extension. You have to apply for a new residence permit. This means that you may also have to return to your own country to apply for a Provisional Residence Permit (in Dutch: machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf or MVV).

If you submit the application online you pay immediately with iDEAL. Have you applied in writing? Then you will receive a letter explaining how you can pay.

- Positive decision: your residence permit will be extended.
- Negative decision: your residence permit will not be extended. You will receive this decision in a letter. You can object against this decision.

7. Collect residence permit open minusWhen the residence permit is ready at an IND desk, you will receive a letter. You must make an appointment to collect it. Make an appointment to collect the residence document.
