Permit damaged, lost, stolen or change of personal details

Is your residence document not yet expired? In certain situations you can have the residence document replaced.

Theft or loss of residence document

Your residence document has been stolen or lost. You first go to the police to report the theft/loss. The police will give you a certified copy of the official report. When you send the application to replace the residence document, you enclose a copy of the official report.

Theft or loss of residence document abroad

Has your residence document been stolen or lost during a stay abroad? You then, also, first go to the police to report the theft/loss. The report has to be drawn up in Dutch, English, French or German. Is this not the case? The report then has to be translated by a translator certified by a Dutch court.

When you send the application to replace the residence document, you enclose a copy of the official report. Or, you enclose a printout of the digital application.

Without having a residence document, you may need a visa to travel back to the Netherlands. Please contact the Dutch representation in the country you are staying.

Finding the residence document again after report of theft/loss

Did you report the theft/loss to the police? This makes the residence document permanently invalid. You then always have to apply for replacement. Even when you find the residence document again, you can no longer use it. You must hand in this residence document to the IND. You can do this at an IND Desk. For example, when you collect the replacement residence document. Or, you can send the document, that you found again, to the following address:

Damaged residence document

Your residence document is damaged in such a way that you can no longer use it as a valid identity document. You enclose a copy of the front and back of the damaged residence document with the application to replace the residence document. You have to hand in the damaged document when you collect the new residence document.

Wrong information on the residence document

Your residence document has the wrong information on it. For example, a wrong or old name, date of birth, place of birth or nationality.

The IND uses the information from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP). Therefore first contact your municipality. They will check if your personal details are entered correctly in the BRP. If your personal details in the BRP are not correct, then these have to be changed first. Only then can you ask the IND to replace your residence document.

Change employment rights on residence document

You have built-up employment rights and you are now allowed to work without a TWV. You can apply for a new residence document with the following employment rights: Work allowed free from restrictions, TWV not required. You do not have to pay for this application.

Is your residence permit valid for less than 1 month? Then you can apply for an extension. You can use application form number 7016. Write on the form that you wish to have the labour market notification "arbeid vrij toegestaan" (work freely permitted) on your new residence permit."

Costs

This application costs € 135.

Do you have a permanent residence permit or long-term resident EC? Your application costs € 135. Children under 18 pay € 58.

Do you have a residence permit to stay with a family member or continued residence after stay with a family member? Your application costs € 135. Children under 18 that stay with a family member pay € 58.

Do you have a temporary or permanent asylum residence permit? Your application costs € 135. Children under 18 with an asylum residence permit pay € 58.

Do you have a document document EU/EEA citizen of the Union? Your application costs € 58. Children under 18 that have a document EU/EEA citizen of the Union pay € 31. 

Are a you Turkish citizen or a family member of a Turkish citizen? Your application costs € 58. Turkish nationals under 18 or family members under 18 of a Turkish national pay € 31.

Are you replacing your residence document because you have the right on another labour market notification? You do not have to pay for the application.

 

After the application

Collect your residence permit

The IND aims to have the residence permit ready for you within 2 weeks after the positive decision. You receive a letter when you can collect the residence permit. For this, you have to make an appointment online at the IND desk stated in the letter. Keep in mind that it is not always possible to visit an IND desk at short notice. Therefore, please schedule an appointment in time.

Are you younger than 18 years? You can then only collect your residence permit together with your parent(s) or legal representative(s). 

You pay the costs for the application at the IND Desk. You also hand in your old residence permit (except when it was stolen or lost).

Check to see if the information on the residence permit is correct while you are still at the IND desk. If something is incorrect, inform the IND staff member at once.

Period of validity residence document

The replacement residence document usually has the same end date as the original residence document. 

Was the original residence document valid for less than 1 month? You will not get a new residence document, but a formal decision. This letter states your right of residence and the end date of your right of residence in the Netherlands.

Right to work

​The back of your residence document has the same employment rights as were listed on your original document. This is not the case when you asked for a replacement to have the employment rights changed.

How do I complete an online application in case of damage or incorrect personal details?

TWV

​A TWV is a work permit. The employer applies for a TWV with UWV (Netherlands Employees Insurance Agency). UWV examines among other things if there is no employee with the Dutch, EU/EEA or Swiss nationality that is qualified for the job.

DigiD with SMS code

Nowadays you can arrange many things yourself on government websites. With DigiD you log in to your personal account on government websites. Your DigiD consists of a username and password that you both choose yourself. Don't have a DigiD yet? Request this on www.digid.nl.

​To apply for a residence permit online you need to have a DigiD with SMS code. After logging in with your DigiD you will receive an SMS with a code. You will have to fill out this code as well to get access to the online application forms.

Do you have a DigiD but no SMS code verification? Please go to Mijn DigiD and log in. Choose 'Extra sms-controle aanvragen' and enter your mobile phone number. Within 5 days you receive a letter with an activation code. Activate the sms control functionality on the website of DigiD with this activation code.
