In March 2022, the total influx of asylum seekers (the total of first and repeated asylum applications and relatives) amounted to 4,202. This is an increase as compared to the previous month: it was 2,518 in February.
The top 5 countries of origin of asylum seekers who submitted an asylum application in March 2022 are Syria (1,410), Afghanistan (538), Yemen (353), Turkey (210) and Somalia (177).
The number of first asylum applications in March was 2,921. In February, this number was 1,600. The top 5 countries of origin of asylum seekers who submitted a first asylum application are Syria (625), Afghanistan (502), Yemen (319), Somalia (157) and Turkey (154).
Russian invasion of Ukraine
Ukraine is not in the top 10 of the countries of origin of the individuals who make their first asylum applications. The reason for this is that Ukrainians are temporarily protected in the Netherlands under the Temporary Protection Directive of the European Union; they do not have to submit an asylum application at Ter Apel application centre.
With 83 asylum applications in March, the Russian Federation is number 9 in the top 10 of first asylum applications. In January and February, there were 16 and 19 respectively. So there has been an increase since the beginning of the year.
Transfer from Afghanistan
Of 502 first applications referred to Afghanistan as the country of origin, 411 were submitted by the persons who were transferred from Afghanistan to the Netherlands.
The number of repeated asylum applications in March was 143. In February, this number was 145. The top 5 countries of origin of asylum seekers who have submitted repeated asylum applications are Nigeria (25), Afghanistan (13), Iraq (10), Iran (8) and Syria (8).
In March, the number of family members who entered the country was 1,138. In February, this number was 773. The top 5 countries of origin of family members are Syria (777), stateless persons (67), Turkey (54), unknown (37) and Eritrea (33)
In March, the number of asylum applications submitted by unaccompanied minor aliens (AMV) was 248. In February, this number was 186. The top 5 countries of origin of unaccompanied minors are Syria (75), Somalia (41), Eritrea (31) Yemen (21) and Afghanistan (14).
