Renew permanent residence permit
Requirements
Your residence document or card is about to expire. You wish to renew the residence document. The requirements are as follows:
- You have legally resided in the Netherlands.
- You have one of these documents:
- Permanent regular residence permit (type II)
- Long-term resident EC (type V)
- Permanent asylum residence permit (type IV)
- Permanent residence citizens of the European Union (type EU/EEA)
- Permanent residency Withdrawal Agreement (Brexit)

These are the steps in the application process for renewal of your residence document.

2. Collect documents open minusThe written application form lists which documents you need. Collect all documents before you apply. You can upload the documents with the online application.

You can submit the application from 3 months before your current residence document expires.

4. Pay for application open minusThe renewal of the residence document costs € 81,00. Are you under 18? Then a different amount applies. For all fees and exceptions, visit our web page Fees: costs of an application.
When you apply online, you pay the fee immediately with iDEAL internet banking. Are you submitting a written application? Then you will receive a letter explaining how you can pay.

5. Wait for decision on application open minusThe IND must take a decision within 8 weeks. This is called the decision period.
We can extend the decision period if it takes longer to decide. For example, because the application is not complete. In that case, the IND will send a message.

6. Decision on application open minusThe IND first checks whether you meet the requirements of renewing your residence document.
The decision is in the form of a letter. The decision is positive or negative.
- Positive decision: you will receive a new residence document.
- Negative decision: you will not receive a residence document. You can object against this decision.

7. Collect residence permit open minusWhen the residence permit is ready at an IND desk, you will receive a letter. You must make an appointment to collect it. Make an appointment to collect the residence document.

Working with the residence document
With this residence permit, you are free to work in the Netherlands. Your employer does not need a work permit (in Dutch: tewerkstellingsvergunning or TWV) for you. It says on the back of your residence document ''Free to work, work permit not required'' (in Dutch: Arbeid vrij toegestaan, TWV niet vereist).
Rights
With a permanent residence permit, you have almost the same rights as someone with the Dutch nationality. The difference is that you are not allowed to vote in national elections. And that you are not allowed to work in certain special government sectors. For example, you cannot join the police force or the army.
