Asylum trends in July 2020

The situation around corona and the measures it entails to prevent further spreading of the coronavirus had an impact on the number of asylum applications and their processing in the first half of this year. Since June, the total asylum influx (i.e. the total number of first and repeat applications and asylum reunifications) has been increasing again (June: 888). The number of asylum applications was 1679 in July.

First asylum applications
The total number of first asylum applications was 1206. In June, it was 652. The top 5 countries of origin of asylum seekers who filed a first asylum application are Syria (398), Turkey (127), Algeria and Morocco (both 67), Nigeria (58), and unknown (57).

Repeat asylum applications
The number of repeat asylum applications was 234. In June, it was 178. The top 5 countries of origin of asylum seekers who filed a repeat asylum application are Iraq (30), Iran (26), Morocco (19), Afghanistan (15), and Algeria (14).

Asylum family reunification
The number of people arriving for asylum family reunification was 239. In June, this was 58. Most people arriving for asylum family reunification were from Syria (139), Turkey (71), Eritrea (9), stateless (7), and Iraq (6).

Unaccompanied minors
The number of asylum applications filed by unaccompanied minors (UAMs) was 93. In June, this was 39. The top 5 countries of UAMs are Syria (36), Morocco (11), Afghanistan (10), Eritrea (8), and Algeria (6).
