Have official foreign documents legalised and translated into Dutch, English, French or German.

According to your answers, you have to send these documents with your application: 

What do you have to submit?

A copy of your passport or other travel document. Copy the page with identity information and all the pages with travel stamps. Do not include blank pages.

Why do you have to submit this?

This proves your identity. And that your age meets the requirements. 

What do you have to submit?

A copy of the EU citizen's passport or identity card. Copy the page with identity information and all the pages with travel stamps. Do not copy empty pages. 

Why do you have to submit this?

EU citizens prove their identity and nationality with this.

What do you have to submit?

If you are not registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP), you have to submit copies of documents showing that you live in the Netherlands. For example, a tenancy/purchase agreement for a home, proof of payment of rent, bank statements, energy bills and/or other bills showing your name and address.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you lived in the Netherlands for at least 1 year before the EU citizen died.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you meet the requirement that you had been living in the Netherlands for 1 year before the EU citizen died.

What do you have to submit?

Copy of your legalised foreign marriage certificate or registered partnership certificate. 

If your marriage or registered partnership is registered with a municipality in the Netherlands, you do not need to submit a copy of the certificate. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows your family relationship.

What do you have to submit?

Submit copies of documents showing that you and your partner are in a sustainable relationship. Include as many documents as possible. For example, submit:

  • Photos of you and your partner, from the start of your relationship to now. Submit photos from as many different moments as possible. For example, your meeting, visits of your partner to the Netherlands, getting to know family, holidays. Add what is happening in the photo and who is in it. Submit photos with the date and location information from the phone or camera. If that is not possible, you can add the date and location yourself. Print (colour) photos in colour. 
  • (Airline) tickets, bookings and other proof of activities of you and your partner. Also submit copies of payment receipts.
  • Proof of contacts between you and your partner via telephone. And through social media like WhatsApp and Facebook. From the start of your relationship to now, with the date of the contact included.
  • Proof that the phone numbers of the WhatsApp accounts or the accounts of another chat app belong to you and your partner. For example, an itemised phone bill.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows your relationship with the EU citizen.

What do you have to submit?

Have you lived with the EU citizen? Or are you living together now? Then you have to submit copies of documents showing this. Include as many documents as possible. This makes it clearer to the IND what the situation is. For example, submit copies of:

  • Tenancy or purchase agreement of the home in which you live or lived together.
  • Proof of registration with a municipality abroad.
  • Do you and/or your partner have (or have you and/or your partner had) a residence document in an EU country other than the Netherlands? Then you have to submit that document or those documents along.
  • Bank statements for you and your partner. Showing the amount in your account and the income and expenses for the past 3 months. And at least the last 4 digits of the IBAN.
  • Bank cards of you and your partner. With at least the last 4 digits of the IBAN.
  • Final account(s) of gas and/or electricity or otherwise other energy bills. With your address on them. And copies of proof that you paid the account(s).
  • Bill from a doctor or dentist, hospital or other care provided to you and your partner. Your address has to be on this bill. And copies of proof that you have paid the bills.
  • Purchase receipts showing your address. It does not matter what the receipts are for. Also submit copies of proof that you have paid the bill.
  • Public transport cards and/or subscriptions for you and your partner. And travel history, if possible. And proof that you have paid the bills.
  • A newspaper subscription or another subscription, such as from a gym. With your address on it. And proof that you have paid the bills.
  • Phone bills and any itemised bills. With your address on them. And proof that you have paid the bills.
  • Bills, orders or other post (not from the government) from you and your partner. With the address and date on them. And proof that you have paid the bills and/or orders.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you have lived together and shows your sustainable relationship.

What do you have to submit?

Have you and your partner lived together for less than 6 months? Or do you not live together? Then you have to submit copies of as many additional documents as possible:

  • Are you (temporarily) not living together now? Write down the reason for this on a separate A4 sheet. Also submit documents that prove what you are saying. 
  • Are you not living together? Enclose documents showing how you give substance to your relationship. For example, copies of public transport cards and subscriptions for you and your partner. And of your travel history. And of proof that you have paid the bills.
  • Do you and your partner have a child or children together? Then you have to include a copy of the birth certificate. And documents showing that you are jointly caring for your child or children. Such as statements or bills from maternity support services, birth, childcare and sports clubs. Or the child health booklet, school reports and an employment contract from your child's side job abroad. 
  • Documents showing that you and your partner take care of each other. For example, with money or care. For example, documents showing that you accompany each other to important appointments, such as medical appointments and/or school or work appointments.
  • Documents showing that you have financial obligations or property together. For example, a car or a holiday. Or, for example, a document showing that you have debts or a bank account together.

Why do you have to submit this?

If you have lived together for less than 6 months, the IND needs additional proof that you are in a sustainable relationship.

What do you have to submit?

Copy of a document showing your family relationship with the EU citizen. Or with the partner of the EU citizen. Examples include a birth certificate, deed of recognition of parentage or copy of decision from a family court. Alternatively, submit other documents or statements that show the family relationship. Does the situation concern adoption? Then you have to submit copies of documents proving this. 

Sometimes you need a combination of documents to prove your family relationship.

You have to translate and legalise foreign official documents.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are a family member of an EU citizen. 

What do you have to submit?

  • Proof that you have parental authority of your child.  For example, a copy of an extract from the parental authority register. Or a court ruling.
  • Do you not have parental authority of your child? Then include a statement explaining why that is the case.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are responsible for the care of the child and that the child is dependent on you.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you have and have had day-to-day care of your child. In the Netherlands and/or abroad. Include as many documents as possible. This makes it clearer to the IND what the situation is. For example, submit: 

  • A letter or statement in which you describe your care and upbringing tasks. And explain the family situation from the birth of your child until now. Include copies of as many documents as possible from independent and impartial individuals and organisations that support your statement. Also answer the following questions in your statement: 
    • What would change in the life your child if you were not allowed to live in the Netherlands? 
    • Is there a special situation, for example regarding the family, school, support, social network, care, or health of the child?
  • Is there another parent? Then you also have to include a statement from that parent, describing your tasks in the care and upbringing of the child. And the family situation from the birth of your child until now. Include copies of as many documents as possible from independent and impartial individuals and organisations that support the statement. 
  • Also submit a copy of the travel document of the other parent. Only copy the page with the identity information and signature.
  • Copies of photos of you with your child. From birth or from the moment you became part of your child’s life up to now. Give explanations for what is shown in the photos. Also submit photos that show your involvement in care and upbringing tasks. 
  • Copies of documents or statements from, for example, a general practitioner or medical specialist that show you were present during medical treatments or check-ups of your child. In the Netherlands or abroad. And when this was.
  • Copies of documents or statements from, for example, the school of your child, sports club, daycare centre, sports coach, or maternity nurse in the Netherlands or abroad. And these should describe your care and upbringing tasks. And since when you have had these tasks. 
  • Copies of documents showing that you are financially supporting your Dutch child. Financial support means that you regularly pay for something for your child. For example, include copies of receipts for school supplies or clothing. You have to be able to prove that you were the one who paid. You can also include copies of documents showing that you transferred money for the care of your child. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are raising and caring for your child.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you and your parent live at the same address. 

Are you registered at the same address as your parent in the municipality's Personal Records Database (BRP)? Then you do not need to submit any documents. 

Do you not live with your parent? Then you have to include a statement explaining why.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you live with your parent.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you and the child are living together. For example:

  • Bank statements for you and your family member/partner. Preferably with debit card transactions for supermarket purchases. The statements show your name(s). And at least the last 4 IBAN digits.
  • Doctor, dentist, hospital and/or other healthcare bills showing your address in the Netherlands.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you and your child live together.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you belonged to the family of the EU citizen and partner in your country of origin.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are part of your parent's and the EU citizen's family.

What do you have to submit?

Documents showing that the EU citizen or married/registered partner gave you money regularly in the last 12 months before you came to the Netherlands. For your basic needs such as food, drink and/or clothing. Or for your fixed expenses such as rent or mortgage, energy, insurance and/or subscriptions. 

Submit copies of documents showing that the EU citizen or married/registered partner gave you money and what you spent it on. Or of documents showing that the EU citizen or married/registered partner paid bills for you. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you already received financial support from your family member in the country you previously lived in.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that without financial help from your parent or the married/registered partner, you could not pay your basic needs and/or your fixed expenses. In the country where you are from or previously lived. For example, a statement from an official organisation from this country showing this. Also include a letter explaining that you were financially dependent. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are financially dependent on the EU citizen.

What do you have to submit?

Have you been in the Netherlands for 4 months or more? Then you have to prove that the EU citizen or the married/registered partner also gave you money regularly in the Netherlands. For your basic needs such as food, drink and/or clothing. Or for your fixed expenses such as rent or mortgage, energy, insurance and/or subscriptions. 

Submit copies of documents showing that the EU citizen or married/registered partner gave you money and what you spent it on. Or of documents showing that the EU citizen or married/registered partner paid bills for you. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are still financially dependent on the EU citizen even in the Netherlands.

What do you have to submit?

Have you been in the Netherlands for 4 months or more? Then you have to submit copies of documents showing that without financial help from your parent or the married/registered partner, you cannot pay your basic needs and/or fixed expenses in the Netherlands. For example, a statement from an (aid) organisation showing this. Also include a letter explaining that your were financially dependent.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are still financially dependent on the EU citizen even in the Netherlands.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you previously lived with your family member. So in your country of origin or another country before your family member came to the Netherlands. For example, a certificate of registration for you and your family member from a municipality abroad. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows your dependency on the EU citizen.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you have serious health problems. And documents showing that you are dependent on the personal care of the EU citizen or the married/registered partner. Submit:

  • Statement from a treating doctor or healthcare facility. Or another document proving your health problems.
  • A letter writing why you need personal care of your family member. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows your dependency on the EU citizen.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you lived with your Dutch family member/partner in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland. And that this lasted for at least 3 months. For example:

  • Bank statements for you and your Dutch family member/partner. Preferably with debit card transactions for supermarket purchases. The statements show your name(s). And at least the last 4 IBAN digits.
  • Bank cards showing at least the last 4 IBAN digits.
  • Documents from the fixed expenses for the last 3 months abroad. For example, a tenancy or purchase contract, a document showing tenancy or mortgage costs, energy, doctor, dentist and/or telephone bills, television, internet, newspaper and/or other subscription bills and tax assessments for both of you. For bills, also submit copies of proof that these have been paid.
  • Documents showing that you and your partner had health insurance abroad. And that you paid for these insurances.
  • Documents from your work and/or that of your Dutch family member/partner in the EU country. For example, an employment contract, payslips and annual statement(s). When working as a self-employed person: registration in the business register, balance sheet, profit or loss accounts and operating results.
  • Did your Dutch family member/partner continue to work in the Netherlands when you lived together in the EU/EEA country or Switzerland? Or did you continue to work in the Netherlands? Then you have to submit documents of your commute between the EU/EEA country or Switzerland and the Netherlands. For example, public transport tickets, petrol station bills and airline tickets. Also include a letter explaining how your Dutch family member or partner or yourself combined staying in the other EU country with working in the Netherlands.
  • Was your Dutch family member/partner not working when you lived in the EU country? And/or you did not (either)? Then you have to submit documents proving how you got money, that you were looking for work or doing training. For example, benefit information, registrations with employment or temporary work agencies, job applications and invitations for interviews. And diplomas and certificates for courses or training.
  • Did you or your Dutch partner own a car in the EU country? Then you have to submit documents showing that you had the registration number registered there. Or that you later had the foreign registration number registered in the Netherlands.
  • Do you or your partner have a child or children? Then you have to submit statements or bills from maternity support services, birth, childcare and sports clubs, for example. Or a copy of the child health booklet, school reports and an employment contract from your child's side job abroad. Did the child/children not live with you in that country? Then you have to submit a letter writing why this was the case. And who the child/children lived with. And why they lived with this person. You also have to submit documents that prove the answers to these questions.
  • Other documents proving that your family member and you lived together in another EU country. For example, proofs of holidays and trips, purchase receipts and their payments, public transport cards and proofs of payment for them and post.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you lived with your Dutch family member in the other Member State.

What do you have to submit?

Submit copies of documents showing that you and your Dutch family member/partner were registered in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland. For example:

  • Documents proving that you and your Dutch family member/partner were allowed by law to be in the EU or EEA country or Switzerland. For example, an EU residence document. Or a document containing a government decision. If you do not have these documents, you have to submit a letter writing why this is the case. Preferably also with (official) supporting documents.
  • Documents showing that you and your partner/family member were registered with the foreign municipality. And during which period that was. For example, an extract from the population register. Or proof of registration and deregistration with the municipality/municipalities.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you had legal residence in the other Member State.

What do you have to submit?

  • Copies of documents showing the family relationship between the child and the EU citizen. 
  • Copies of documents showing the family relationship between you and the child.

Examples of documents include: a birth certificate, deed of recognition or a decision from a family court, documents proving adoption. Sometimes you need a combination of documents to prove your family relationship.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents that show who are the parents of the children. Examples of documents are: birth certificate, certificate of recognition or a court ruling from a family court, documents that show the adoption.

With this document you show that the children are family members of an EU citizen. 

What do you have to submit?

What do you have to submit?

A copy of a document proving that the EU citizen has moved abroad. For example, proof of registration in a foreign municipality.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that the EU citizen has left the Netherlands.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you are studying in the Netherlands. For example, proof of enrolment at school or university for this year.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that you are studying in the Netherlands.

What do you have to submit?

  • Copies of documents showing when the divorce was filed. For example, the petition for divorce to the court.
  • Copies of documents showing that the marriage ended and the date on which it ended. For example, the divorce certificate.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that your marriage has ended.

What do you have to submit?

A copy of the termination agreement of the registered partnership. Or copies of other documents showing that the registered partnership ended and the date on which it ended. 

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that your registered partnership has ended.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that the relationship ended and the date on which it ended. For example, statements from yourself and/or others stating when the relationship ended. Or screenprints of contact between you and your partner via social media such as WhatsApp and Facebook showing that.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that your relationship has ended.

What do you have to submit?

A copy of the death certificate.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that your family member has died.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that you have rights of access to your children. These are children of you and the EU citizen. For example, a court ruling. This ruling should show that you need to see your children in the Netherlands.

Why do you have to submit this?

This proves that you have rights of access to your children.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of documents showing that there was a very distressing situation in your relationship with the EU citizen. For example, a statement from you, the report or reports to the police or a statement from healthcare providers.

An example of a distressing situation is if you are a victim of domestic violence during your relationship. Or that you are the victim of an honour crime.

Why do you have to submit this?

This shows that there was a very distressing situation that caused the relationship with the EU citizen to break down.

What do you have to submit?

Are there any special facts or situations that the IND needs to know about? About you, your partner, your parent or both of you? Then you have to submit a letter telling what is going on, and copies of (official) supporting documents.

Why do you have to submit this?

You only have to submit this if there are special facts or situations. And you wish that the IND takes these into account when deciding on your application.

Income documents

The EU citizen has to show sufficient income to meet basic needs for himself/herself and you. 

Are you the caring parent of a minor EU citizen? Then you have to show with your income or resources that you can meet the basic needs of yourself and the EU citizen.

Has the EU citizen died? Or has your relationship with the EU citizen ended? Then you have to prove that you have sufficient income yourself to meet your basic needs. And those of any minor children living with you.

What do you have to submit?

Copy of an employment contract with a company or organisation in the Netherlands.

Why do you have to submit this?

It shows that there is sufficient income to meet your basic needs.

What do you have to submit?

Copies of the last 3 payslips.

It shows that there is sufficient income to meet your basic needs.

What do you have to submit?

  • Copy of a document showing that the EU citizen is registered as a jobseeker with UWV.
  • Is it a subsequent application after staying with an EU citizen? Then the document has to show that you or your family member have been registered as a jobseeker with UWV for the first 6 months.

Why do you have to submit this?

It shows that there is sufficient income to meet your basic needs.

What do you have to submit?

If the EU citizen has been looking for work for more than 6 months: 

  • copies of documents showing that the EU citizen has a good chance of finding a job in the Netherlands.

It shows that there is sufficient income to meet your basic needs.

What do you have to submit?

Proof of registration in the Business Register of the Chamber of Commerce. Or a document showing the registration number of the Chamber of Commerce.

Why do you have to submit this document?

It shows that there is sufficient income to meet your basic needs.

What do you have to submit?

Submit copies of evidence showing that the EU citizen is self-employed in the Netherlands. For example:

  • A balance sheet, profit or loss account. Does the EU citizen not yet have these documents? Then you have to submit a statement or forecast from a financial expert.
  • Monthly statements of operating results. Does the EU citizen/do you not yet have these documents? Then you have to submit a statement or forecast from a financial expert.
  • Final income tax return.
  • All the turnover tax returns from this year.
  • A number of agreements with clients in the past 3 months.
  • Invoices for clients for the past 3 months, with receipts.
  • Statements of the business account(s) for the last 3 months. These have to show the total amount, income and expenditure.

Are you submitting financial statements, interim balance sheets, profit and loss statements or other financial documents? An authorised independent, external expert (such as a (chartered) accountant, a bookkeeper or a financial adviser) has to have created or audited this document. The BECON number and the stamp of the administrative or accounting firm should be on this document. And the signature of the financial expert.

What do you have to submit?

  • Copies of documents showing how the EU citizen obtains money. For example, a copy of a will, property title deed or pension statement.
  • You also have to prove that the money is at the EU citizen's or your disposal. This means the EU citizen/you can access the money at any time. And that the EU citizen gets/you get to decide what happens to this money. 

The money may also come from someone else. For part or all of it. In that case:

  • Submit copies of documents showing where the money came from. For example, proof of a joint bank account. Or power of attorney for banking transactions of the bank account in which the money is held or into which the income is transferred. This is because you have to prove that the money is at the disposal of the EU citizen/you. A mere guarantee or declaration is therefore not enough.

What do you have to send? 

Do you yourself not fill out the form? Then fill out the Authorisation declaration and send this with your application. Also send the documents mentioned under point 4 of the declaration. 

Have you already authorised this person? Or does your parent or legal representative fill out the form for you? Or is the authorised person an attorney that lives and works in the Netherlands? Then you do not have to send the authorisation declaration. 

Why do you have to send this?

With this declaration you give permission to the other person to do the application in your name.

You yourself fill out this declaration and you sign it.

What do you have to send?

Is there another parent that has parental custody of the child? And those that parent not live in the Netherlands? And is that parent also not coming to the Netherlands? Then send: 

  • The filled in and signed Appendix Declaration of consent of the parent remaining behind. 
  • A copy of the passport or other identity card of the parent remaining behind. This document should show the signature of the parent.
