The story of Sean, software developer
'I build digital solutions for more efficient processes' You might expect software developers to spend all day behind a wall of monitors, coding away. But…
"I had expected to have to prove my worth over time, but the team embraced me and involved me in everything from day one."
Sean is a software developer at IND's production house, which is part of the Information Department and makes the software that the IND uses to support employees and applicants. The IND is one of the few government organisations that develops its own software instead of buying it from another company.
"The fact that we develop everything ourselves certainly makes the work more interesting and innovative," Sean explains. "We always use state-of-the-art technology and never stop innovating. Whereas other industries tend to use older technologies, we always work on cutting edge solutions. Moreover, we make sure to stay in close touch with users, which enables us to build exactly what they need. That has to be one of the key reasons why I love working at IND so much: my job is closely connected to the real world and the work I do has an immediate impact."
In pursuit of smarter, more efficient processes and improved services, IND has set out to revamp its support systems. And that's what Sean works on every day. 'I am currently working on the new application system that will soon replace our current system, INDiGO, developing a new feature for regular process applicants such as students, employees or business owners. The goal is to not only simply speed up the work process: the new system should also take admin work off our colleagues' hands. Specifically, the new system will give users more time to focus on the substantive side and human aspects of their work."
"To make sure the software meets all requirements, I work closely with my coworkers and third parties, including IND's trusted partners," Sean continues. "I advise managers and the board on whether their plans are technically feasible, as well as explaining what can and cannot be done with regard to entirely new systems or proposed modifications. As a result, I regularly find myself discussing ways to improve work processes with a multidisciplinary team. During these sessions, we zoom in on what our colleagues need and what we can do to make their lives easier, input I then translate into practical solutions. I love the diversity of my role: I get to do everything from programming and consulting to brainstorming and providing strategic input."
Sean is particularly proud of the tangible improvements his work has delivered. "I helped automate information exchange with other organisations, for instance, including universities of applied sciences, universities and the Chamber of Commerce. In the past, colleagues would have to retrieve and process data manually. Having an automated system has saved them a lot of time. They have even told us that tasks that used to take them half an hour now take no more than a second or two. I am glad my work helped make a difference and their enthusiasm is a reward in and of itself."
Applicants will also notice the differences in the future. "I am currently working on a feature that will help users track their applications", Sean explains. “Like PostNL's Track and Trace service. Life for our applicants is uncertain and chaotic. Hopefully, this feature will give them some peace of mind and clarity on where they stand. I am grateful to be in a position to contribute."
When Sean joined IND three years ago, it was his very first job. "My first job as a grown-up, that is", Sean laughs. "As an entry-level employee, I'd expected to have to prove my worth over time with small tasks, but the team embraced me and involved me in everything from day one." I quickly felt at home here and I still enjoy it every day. The systems I help build here impact people's lives. I help my colleagues work more efficiently and comfortably and I am contributing to improved services for applicants. All in all, I would say that is what gives my work real value."
Sean has a clear message for anyone considering a job with IND: "IND is a great opportunity for all job seekers, whether you are only just starting out or have years of experience. The work is varied, challenging and meaningful. At IND, you get to make a meaningful contribution to society, so what's stopping you?"
