VisualDOC

The application VisualDOC was recently developed by the Document and Identity Office and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO. VisualDOC uses machine learning to help document experts examine documents and to focus the limited capacity on the appropriate cases. VisualDOC has three objectives:
•    to accelerate the examination process
•    to compile files of examined cases
•    to provide access to reference material

Acceleration

The vast majority of documents examined by the Document and Identity Office (Bureau Documenten) comply with expected requirements. VisualDOC helps document examiners identify the limited group of documents that raise questions. The software processes images, finds comparison material and alerts the document expert in case of deviation. VisualDOC also enables remote screen sharing, which reduces the need for logistical movements. In addition, the Office can also extend its expertise in this manner on the external borders of the European Union (EU).

File compilation

The Document and Identity Office uses VisualDOC to support the examination process. Original documents are scanned and presented electronically to the Office so that the examination process can start quickly. Scans of original documents are promptly classified by risk, and high-risk documents are requested physically for further examination. Details of the examination are easy to find in the application, including how the examination was carried out and which conclusions were drawn.

Comparison material

The Document and Identity Office uses reference and comparison material to examine documents. This involves comparing presented documents with similar, known documents. VisualDOC has an extensive search and analysis function to support this activity. In addition, document examiners can use the application to extensively compare elements such as signatures and stamps with those found on other documents.
