Legal representative - a meaningful job

As a litigation representative, you work for a unique organisation that often finds itself in the spotlight. You attend more hearings than the average solicitor, and your legal expertise makes a meaningful difference in the lives of people who want to stay in the Netherlands.

Interesting work...

As a legal representative, you are responsible for handling immigration cases in court. You assess the legal tenability of decisions in immigration cases and defend the Minister’s position, in writing and verbally, at Aliens Divisions and on appeal before the Council of State.

Legal representatives are required to possess many of the same qualities as solicitors and public prosecutors: you have strong analytical and language skills, the ability to work in a dynamic environment, and the capacity to distinguish between primary and secondary issues. You also have to be people-oriented, because there is a person with their own story behind every case. That is what makes this job so interesting!

... for ambitious solicitors

Do you have an ambitious nature, a university-level Master’s degree in a legal field and a desire to do meaningful work for the Netherlands and people who want to live here? Then the position of legal representative is a good fit for you.

Curious about the life of a Legal Representative at the Immigration and Naturalisation Service?
During the IND Legal Affairs Department's In-house Day, you will have a unique opportunity to learn everything about the role of Legal Representative.

The work week of a legal representative

As a legal representative, you attend court hearings on various immigration cases on average once a week. Ranging from an asylum centred around the credibility of a religious conversion, to a regular residency case concerning the validity of a marriage, a medical case or a naturalisation case. No two cases are the same.

In your work, you look beyond the law books, consulting digital sources, information reports, work instructions and case law. You sometimes consult with the Document and Identity Office of the IND about the authenticity of subsequent documents, or with experts on country of origin information and language analyses. Every case is unique, which makes for varied and challenging work.

Working independently, but not alone

Much of your work involves analysing and advocating for immigration cases. This may sound like solo work, but in reality you will be part of a close-knit team. You work with fellow legal representatives, legal assistants, the support team and the specialist teams. The Department of Legal Affairs, where you will be working, places a high value on social cohesion. Which is why we regularly have team and office outings. Every year, we also organise a Legal Affairs event, the Legal Affairs Awards and a (walking) challenge. Our staff put on lots of events as well, from mixers to variety shows.

Healthy work-life balance

Hearings are often scheduled four to five weeks in advance. Before and after each hearing, your schedule will usually be fairly flexible. Do you enjoy working with your colleagues at the office? Or do you prefer to prepare a case from home? Depending on your work and training commitments, you can make arrangements with your manager to create a work schedule that best suits your lifestyle. Regular team meetings are usually held at the office to maintain a strong connection within the teams.
