You do not need a Schengen visa

Do you meet all the requirements for a short stay? After your residence permit has expired, you can stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days during your visa-exempt term. You do not have to leave the Netherlands or the Schengen area first.

Keep your expired residence document with you until you leave the Netherlands or the Schengen area. This way, you can show that you have had lawful residence in the Netherlands.

You need a Schengen visa

You first have to apply for a Schengen visa in order to be able stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days after your residence permit has expired. You have been given a return decision
