Total influx of asylum seekers 2016 31.600

The total influx of asylum seekers (first asylum applications, repeated asylum applications and family members of asylum status holders) amounted in 2016 to about 31.600. This influx was almost half lower than in the peak year 2015 (about 58.900).

34% of the total influx of asylum seekers in 2016 is formed by persons with Syrian nationality, followed by Eritreans (9%) and Albanians (5%). Said first and second place are relative to 2015 unchanged. Third place  in 2015 was taken by Iraqis.

First asylum applications

The number of first asylum applications declined from about 43.100 in 2015 to approximately 18.200 in 2016. More than 57% of the total influx of asylum seekers in 2016 relates to first asylum applications. This was 73% in 2015. The top three of nationalities of persons who submitted a first asylum application is formed by Syrians (12%), Albanians (9%) and Eritreans (8%).

Repeated requests for asylum

The number of repeated applications decreased from about 1.900 in 2015 to about 1.700 in 2016. More than 5% of the total asylum influx 2016 relates to repeated asylum applications. This was 3% in 2015. The top three of nationalities of nationalities of persons who submitted a repeated asylum application over the whole of 2016 is constituted by Afghans, Iraqis and Iranians.

Family reunification

Family members of asylum status holders may be eligible for a residence permit under certain conditions. The number of traveling family members declined from about 13.800 in 2015 to approximately 11.800 in 2016. More than 37% of the total influx of asylum seekers in 2016 relates to family reunification. This was 24% in 2015. The top three of nationalities of family members over the whole of 2016 is formed by Syrians (71%), Eritreans (11%) and Stateless Persons (10%).

December 2016

In December 2016, the total influx of asylum seekers (first asylum applications, repeated asylum applications and family members of asylum status holders) was about 3.900. This is a slight decrease of 3% compared to November 2016 (about 4.000).

In December, there was another increase in the number of traveling family members visible with respect to the previous month. This is mainly due to persons with Syrian nationality (about 1.800 compared to 1.700 in November).
