Brexit extension: no consequences for UK nationals living in the Netherlands

During the Brexit extension period, UK nationals and their family  members keep their rights as EU citizens.

The EU has now agreed to the British government’s request to extend the date of Brexit (31 October 2019) to 31 January 2020. This means that a no-deal Brexit on 31 October 2019 has now been ruled out. The new Brexit date is 31 January 2020 at the latest, or as soon as the British and European parliaments approve the withdrawal agreement.
Because of this UK nationals and their family members living in the Netherlands keep their rights as EU citizens to live, work and study here in any event until the date of Brexit. They do not need the temporary residence permit they received from the IND in March or October 2019 during the extension period.

Keep temporary residence permit safe
It is still important that UK nationals keep the temporary residence permit they have received safe, because after the extension, a no-deal Brexit is still possible. UK nationals and their family members can use the temporary residence permit to show that they are entitled to live, work and study in the Netherlands after a no-deal Brexit in the national transition period up to and including 31 January 2021.
Many UK nationals and their family members who are registered in the Personal Records Database (Basisregistratie Personen or BRP) already received a temporary residence permit before 29 March. These permits are valid up to and including 30 June 2020. If it is certain that there will be a no-deal Brexit, the IND will again send these UK nationals and their family members a temporary residence permit valid during the 15-month transition period after a no-deal Brexit. In this way, the IND can ensure that all registered UK nationals their family members living in the Netherlands have a temporary residence permit with the same duration of validity.
The IND advises UK nationals and their families living in the Netherlands who have not yet registered in the BRP, to do so before Brexit.

New developments
In the event of new developments, the IND will continue to update UK nationals on our website, social media and the Brexit newsletter.
