Now the turn of Brits with permanent EU residence (EU duurzaam verblijf) to arrange their residence after Brexit

Last update: 12 June 2020

Last week the IND also started inviting Brits with a permanent EU residence document to arrange their residence after Brexit.

It concerns Brits and their family members living with a residence document in the Netherlands who have lived here for 5 years or more on the grounds of EU law.

As a result of Brexit, the residence document for permanent residence as an EU citizen is no longer valid for Brits. During the transition period they can continue to live in the Netherlands until 31 December 2020. If they would like to continue to live in the Netherlands from 1 January 2021, they need a new residence document. To help them with this, the IND started sending letters to them last week inviting them to exchange their old residence document for a new one. This is free of charge.

On 31 January this year, the UK left the EU. The IND immediately started sending invitations to registered Brits living in the Netherlands to arrange their residence for after Brexit. This is happening in stages spread over the transition period and afterwards until 1 July 2021. In this way the IND can process every application carefully and on time.
