Influx of asylum seekers in May 2021

​In May, the influx of asylum seekers, composed of first and repeated applications for asylum and dependents [joining family members of asylum seekers], was 1,920, similar to the previous month. In April, the total influx of asylum seekers was 1,927. 

First asylum applications

The number of first asylum applications in May was 954. In April, this was 911. The top 5 countries of origin of asylum seekers who filed a first asylum application are Syria (308), Turkey (81), Algeria (69), Morocco (53), and Eritrea (48).

Repeated asylum applications

The number of repeated asylum applications in May was 134. In April, this was 138. The top 5 countries of origin of asylum seekers who submitted a repeated asylum application are Iran (29), Nigeria (11), Eritrea and stateless (both 9), Afghanistan (7), and Syria (6).  

Joining family members

The number of entering persons seeking family reunification in May was 832. In April, the number was 878. The top 5 countries persons seeking family reunification originate from are Syria (496), Eritrea (98), Yemen and Turkey (50), Iraq (34) and stateless (20).

UMA

The number of applications for asylum from unaccompanied minor aliens (UMAs) was in May 91. In April, this was 93. The top 5 countries of origin of UMAs are Syria (32), Morocco (15), Somalia (11), Afghanistan and Eritrea (7), and Algeria (less than 5).
